First: is this A&E, not the dentist?
Go straight to the Emergency Department at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital if there's facial swelling that's spreading or affecting your eye, breathing or swallowing; bleeding that won't stop with firm pressure; or an injury that may involve a broken jaw. Those need hospital care first — dentistry comes after.
Knocked-out adult tooth: the sixty-minute rule
Find the tooth and hold it by the crown, never the root. If it's clean, try to place it gently back in the socket and bite on a cloth; if you can't, store it in milk. Then get seen immediately — the first hour makes the difference between saving and losing it. (Baby teeth are different: don't reimplant them — but do get the child seen.)
Toothache, lost fillings and broken teeth
Take painkillers as directed on the packet, avoid very hot or cold food on the tooth, and don't put aspirin against the gum — it burns. A lost filling or chipped tooth rarely threatens the tooth immediately, but bacteria and hot-cold sensitivity make it worse by the day — protect any sharp edge with sugar-free gum and get booked in.
