The Bailiwick's support for children's teeth is thinner than most parents assume — here's the honest picture, and how to fill it.

The universal offer: one free check-up a year
Every under-18 in Guernsey is entitled to one free dental check-up each year with their private dentist. It's worth using every single year — a check-up catches problems early. But be clear about what it is: an examination, once a year. Treatment, hygiene care and everything preventive sit outside it for most families.
The Children's Dental Service
A fuller range of treatment — including orthodontics — is available through the States' Children's Dental Service, but only for children who meet its eligibility criteria. If you think your family may qualify, ask; if you don't qualify, everything beyond the annual check-up is yours to arrange and pay for privately.
The gap: everything between check-ups
One examination a year doesn't clean teeth, coach brushing, apply fluoride or fix the small things before they grow. That's why the Harbour Crew Plan makes every child under 18 free in a member household — two check-ups a year, an annual hygiene session with brushing coaching, fluoride and sealant assessment, and same-day emergency cover for the inevitable playground moment.
A simple plan for Guernsey parents
Claim the free annual check-up without fail. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste from the first tooth. Book a hygiene and coaching session yearly — habits set before ten last a lifetime. And before the September sports season, sort a proper custom mouthguard.
